Building trusted hunting partners.
About Devenney Ranch Gun Dog Training
Located on the rural acreage of Devenney Ranch in Northern Colorado, our owner-operated training program is dedicated to developing confident, reliable hunting partners through thoughtful, individualized training.
Led by Rich Devenney, whose experience with versatile hunting dogs spans decades, our approach is rooted in practical field experience, consistency, clear communication, and respect for each dog’s natural ability and temperament.
Rich had the rare opportunity to know and learn personally from Sigbot “Bodo” Winterhelt, co-founder of NAVHDA and author of the organization’s influential Green Book. Bodo’s philosophy of developing the complete versatile hunting dog continues to influence the way Rich approaches training today.
That philosophy was further shaped by years spent hunting behind exceptional dogs, including Axle, a Pudelpointer who remained an accomplished hunting partner well into his senior years, and Trooper, a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon whose instinct, drive, and temperament helped establish the qualities we continue to value in a working dog.
At Devenney Ranch, we intentionally keep our training program small. Limited enrollment allows us to know each dog individually, provide consistent one-on-one handling, and adjust training according to the dog’s maturity, temperament, natural ability, and progress.
From a young dog’s first foundation to advanced development in the field, our goal remains the same: clear communication, dependable performance, and a strong working partnership between dog and handler.
We believe great hunting dogs are not simply trained.
They are developed—with consistency, experience, partnership, and respect for the work they were bred to do.
Training Philosophy
Rich’s approach to training is built around a simple principle: dogs perform best when expectations are clear, communication is consistent, and trust is earned through structure and repetition.
While his experience is rooted in versatile hunting dogs, the same philosophy applies across breeds and training goals. Every dog is approached as an individual, with training adapted to its temperament, maturity, natural ability, and level of confidence.
Rather than forcing every dog through the same method or timeline, Rich focuses on creating a calm, structured learning environment the dog can understand. The goal is to build confidence, strengthen responsiveness, and develop behaviors that hold up beyond the training field and in everyday life.
At Devenney Ranch Gun Dog limited enrollment allows for consistent handling, individualized attention, and thoughtful progression throughout each dog’s stay.
Whether developing a young hunting dog or helping a family companion become more reliable, the objective remains the same:
A confident, responsive dog built through clear communication, consistency, and trust.
Training is not about force or repetition for repetition’s sake.
It is about helping the dog understand what is expected—and building the partnership needed to make that reliability last.
