At Devenney Ranch Gun Dog, we intentionally accept only a limited number of dogs at one time. This allows us to know each dog individually, adjust training as the dog develops, and provide the consistency meaningful progress requires.
Dogs are incorporated into a structured home environment throughout their stay, allowing field development, obedience, and everyday manners to be built together — not treated as separate skills.
Our gun dog training progresses according to the dog in front of us, not simply the calendar. Natural ability, temperament, maturity, confidence, and experience all help determine how each dog develops.

The Gun Dog Development Path
Great hunting dogs are developed over time, not in a single training session.
Our training programs are designed to meet each dog where they are developmentally and build from there. From a young puppy developing confidence and foundational skills to an experienced hunting partner advancing in the field, training progresses according to the individual dog.
Each stage builds on the foundation already established. When appropriate, time at home between programs allows owners to reinforce training, gives young dogs time to mature, and prepares them for the next stage of development.
The goal isn't to rush the process. It's to develop a confident, capable hunting partner with the foundation to keep progressing for years to come.

Gun Dog Training Programs

Round 1: 4 weeks | $2,800
At roughly 5–6 months old:engagement with handler

controlled gunfire only as appropriate
learning how to settle and live appropriately indoors
Then we send the puppy home for approximately 2–4 weeks.
That time at home is an important part of the development process. It gives owners the opportunity to reinforce newly learned skills in everyday life, helps ensure the training transfers beyond the trainer, and allows the puppy time to mature before progressing to the next stage.

For dogs that have completed foundational development and are ready to translate those skills into the field.
Focus may include:
Recall and handling under greater distraction
Hunting pattern and range
Bird finding and pointing development
Retrieving progression
Steadiness progression
Honoring/backing when appropriate

Exposure to realistic hunting scenarios
Prerequisite: Established obedience foundation and appropriate bird/gun exposure. Dogs are evaluated before acceptance.

Designed for mature dogs with an established obedience and field foundation, this program focuses on developing the consistency, control, and reliability expected from a highly finished hunting partner.
Training is individualized to the dog’s experience, temperament, natural ability, and the goals of the owner. Work may include:
Advanced steadiness through wing, shot, and fall
Reliable handling and responsiveness at distance
Refined hunting pattern, range, and field control
Honoring and backing
Advanced retrieving and delivery
Water work and challenging retrieves
Greater reliability around birds and heavy distractions
Exposure to realistic hunting conditions and field scenarios
Continued refinement of obedience and manners away from the field
Because every dog enters this level with a different training history and degree of maturity, program length and goals are determined after evaluation.
Our objective is not simply a dog that performs during training, but a dependable hunting partner capable of working confidently in the field while remaining responsive, controlled, and enjoyable to live with at home.

Every Stay & Train concludes with an owner transfer session so the training doesn't stop when your dog goes home. We'll demonstrate your dog's commands, handling system and expectations and give you a plan for maintaining the progress at home.
